If you want to become a police officer, you need to be prepared to face a lot of competition. Police employment is in high demand and there are many applicants for every available position. That doesn't mean you can't get an "unfair" advantage or simply make sure you don't get weeded out over trivialities. In this article I'll give you some tips on how to avoid being weeded in your quest to be a cop.

The first tip I can give you before you begin the application process is to make sure you're squeaky clean. Of course, if you have a criminal record your chances of being accepted to the force are close to nothing. However, even civil blemishes on your record like unpaid driving tickets can put a hamper in your efforts. Therefore, take some time to make sure you've got all this in order before you apply.

The second thing you can do before beginning the process to becoming a police officer is to get a bunch of reference letters. These can be from former bosses, teachers, professors and so on. Anyone that can make you look good can be a benefit. Remember, you need to have an edge over the other applicants.

Get a worthwhile education. Most police jobs require a high school diploma. However, taking some extra courses or having an academic degree will certainly not hurt you any. Take a few law or criminal behavior courses, make sure you have some basic terms under control. It would be embarrassing if you didn't know what the Miranda rights were, wouldn't it?

Above all, make sure you know how to present yourself as a team player. Police officers work in teams and they rely on each other. Don't be a maverick. Make sure these people can trust you and they'll welcome you as one of their own.
